Squirrel Hair Brush
Finally, the package arrived with my new squirrel hair brushes The brushes were packaged in their own special box. Having read about the proper way to use and care for a watercolor squirrel hair brush I felt prepared. I could not wait to use one. One video I watched stated that you must first rinse out the brush to remove the sizing used to keep the bristles together. I did notice that the water was cloudy after rinsing it out. Another video I watched suggested reshaping the bristles after each rinse, this step ensures the brush always keeps its shape. One artist wrote that you should never leave the brush sitting in water. I had the basic care and use instructions. All that I needed now was to start working with the brush to learn how to use them effectively.
The backstory for deciding to purchase these brushes started after seeing a painting demo by a watercolor artist that used one to create a furry animal with the brush. I commented to the artist about the brush and all I got back was a response, it’s just a regular brush. I had to do some research on my part to find the brush. My research revealed that the regular brush was actually a squirrel hair brush, mop style. These brushes hold a lot of water, allowing the artist to make longer and curvy brush strokes, this sounded appealing. Another tutorial I found showed that even dry brush strokes looked different because of the shape of the brush. I was all in to find one of these brushes. As an artist on a budget, I was shocked when I found out how much they cost. I just kept the idea of this brush in the back of my mind, so to speak. Shopping online at Amazon I ran across a set of brushes that I could afford.
I have to say so far, this has been a good purchase for me No complaints. Time will tell if these brushes will work or if I need to save up and price up.
